Designing for the Evolution of Voice

As digital surfaces continue to evolve, users are becoming more accustomed to using voice/speech for daily tasks such as playing music, checking the weather, or controlling a smart home. This will lead to Voice becoming an essential part of all digital experiences, but only if designers can make it simple and easy to use. The challenge remains the same: to create a consistent experience on any platform the audience chooses to consume it on.

For voice to achieve its true potential, designers need to be responsible for pushing the medium forward, by considering it another tool in their digital toolbox for creating experiences. Designers will be the ones to introduce voice into their company when it makes sense for the user, perhaps as an extension of an existing digital experience, or by bringing their product to a voice-first platform like Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. Designers should be advocates for their users and champion the use of voice, but only when it makes things better. This session will discuss how UX Designers will be challenged with creating a seamless experience, from AirPods to an iPhone or an Amazon Echo to a Microsoft Hololens. We will discuss the future of design and the practices designers need to adapt to in order to create immersive digital experiences that their users will love.

Key Takeaways:

  • Learn how UX designers can be champions for the use of voice
  • Leverage what you already know about UX to design the new experiences with voice/speech
  • Learn about the tool UX designers and developers of the future will use to create these experiences
