CessationCigarette smoking is responsible for more than 480,000 deaths per year in the United States. As a UX design agency focused on behavior change, Mad*Pow was thrilled to partner with Truth Initiative to update becomeanex.org, their website designed to create customized quit plans for smokers. The project proceeded along two tracks through 2017. The team simultaneously implemented short-term design and content updates to improve the experience and developed a long-term strategy to implement over the course of the next several years.
The project integrated behavior change techniques, user experience best practices, and expertise from subject matter experts at the CDC. However, the Mad*Pow team had its share of challenges, including having to identify short-term solutions before cementing a long-term strategy without creating unnecessary future work, and designing a content strategy and improved information architecture without the ability to change any technical aspects of the current site – due to timing limitations. These challenges are not uncommon in the design community, and Mad*Pow and the Truth Initiative relied on solutions including an agile/waterflow blended process, Mad*Pow’s signature Design Studio sessions, and a content-first design solution to implement behavior change techniques.
